John Brown latest body of new paintings are inspired from his travels to two African countries, Morocco and the Gambia. 'Marrakech is known as the 'Rose City'. The walls in the medina are a terracotta/red reflecting the red soil of the surrounding landscape. The Gambia is known as the 'smiling coast of Africa'. There are however, obvious aesthetic differences, Morrocco is more of a dusty warm palette whereas the Gambia is multi-coloured and flamboyant. This body of work, mostly small in scale attempts to marry the figure within an abstract envioronment. There is an attempt to convey a sense of place as experienced in these two different parts of Aftica'.
